Drug addiction is not a new thing, but it has been in practice for centuries. It has become the greatest menace of modern times. Drugs mean all those things which produce a state of drowsiness. It is a kind of narcotics like Heroin, Hashish, Alcohol, charrs, sleeping pills etc.
Drug addiction is increasing in Pakistan. The people become an easy victim to it particularly in our country. The number of Heroin addicts runs into millions. Adding to the latest survey, there are six million heroin addicts in Pakistan. The situation has become very alarming and precarious.
Many people, especially young boys fall an easy victim of drugs. The reasons are quite obvious. Unemployment, poverty, exploitation, family disputes, injustice and disappointments increase tensions. All these problems compel them to use narcotics to release mental tension. These narcotics give them temporary satisfaction.

As compared to past, all kinds of drugs are easily available in our country. Drug peddlers in collusion with the anti-narcotics agencies, sell narcotics fearlessly. It has become profitable business for all those traitors who sell these narcotics.
Its influence on body and soul is captivating. It affects badly our lungs. Firstly, it causes tuberculosis (T.B). Secondly, it devalues the honour and prestige of a person. He becomes a laughing stock for the others. Thirdly, the drug addict becomes a criminal, a robber and a thief. He can steal money or any other thing to get the drug. Lastly, and the most important disadvantage of narcotics is that it harms the prestige of a country and nation in the eyes of other nations and countries.

So in this critical situation it is very necessary to crush every form of drug abuse. Firstly, Government should control its prevalence. It should adopt more strict measures to crush this. Secondly, mass media should create general awareness against this evil. Thirdly, healthy activities like sports, tourism should be promoted. Fourthly, parents should be alert and keep eye over their children. After adopting all these measures, we can save our country from the harms of drug addiction.
