Essay:
Hostel is a part and parcel of every college. Life in a college hostel is full of pleasures and charms but sometimes it becomes boring and tiresome as well. It gives all the students an ample chance to learn how to lead an independent and responsible life. It plays a vital role in the development of the personality of the student. Students of different habits and tastes live together under one roof which results in better understanding and more co-operation among themselves.
All the important affairs of the hostel are managed by hostel superintendent. He takes care of all the students like a father. Management committees of student also help him in the smooth functioning of hostel matters. Every good hostel has a reading room which provides newspapers and magazines of different kinds. Common room in a hostel is a center of activities. Here students watch television and discuss things of common interest. Play room provides the facilities of indoor games. Dining room gives a festive look at morning, noon and night. Different competitions in the hostel give fun and enjoyment to the students.
Hostel life trains a student mentally, morally and spiritually for a successful practical life. He has to follow the rules and regulations of the hostel. No one is allowed to remain out of hostel after a specific time. Therefore, hostel life teaches discipline, punctuality and regularity to the students. Another important charm of hostel life is making new friends. They belong to different families, classes and cultures but they work for a common cause. They work hard to achieve distinctions in their respective examination. Senior students help their juniors in studies and other social activities.
Hostel life has certain disadvantages as well. Young and innocent students fall an easy prey to political and criminal minded students. Some students belonging to rich families lead a luxurious kind of life and spoil the life and character of fellow students. Some students misuse the liberty and freedom of hostel life and ignore their studies. They waste their precious time in idle talk and other useless activities at the cost of their future.
To conclude, we can say that hostel life is a mixed blessing. It has great advantages with some disadvantages. It is a duty of all the students along with the management to create a clean and study friendly atmosphere in college hostels.
