Essay:

“Literature consists of all the books where moral truth and human passion are touched with a certain largeness, sanity and attraction of form.” (Lord Morley)

Literature is the artistic expression of thought, which is replete with feelings and imagination. People are of the view of that literature is a useless activity in the age of science and technology. They forget that literature is shock absorber against the social life. It gives man relief where he is overwhelmed by injustice done to him in the society. Man is an animal that can think and feel. His circumstances are not the same all the time. Against heavy odds he finds shelter in the world of literature.

Study of literature is an antidote to extremist and cruel behavior. In literature we have a world where poetic justice rules supreme. When a rightful man is rewarded and an evil-doer is punished, this is called poetic justice. Literature is the true image of a period. History is the collection of facts about the men of affairs. Literature is the reflection of a common man living in a society. It is in literature that the feelings and reactions of a common man find their expression.

“I lead no party; I follow no leader. I have given the best part of my life to careful study of Islam, its law and polity, its culture, its history and its literature.” (Dr. Allama Iqbal)

Literature will exist and will remain effective as long as common man exists. The world of literature sometimes gives us a useful refuge from the hard realities of life. Sometimes it brings into our notice things which are of the great importance. Science and technology make the human life mechanical. It is literature that lends colour to his monotonous life.

In Europe, the sixteenth century is regarded as the real beginning of the modern world. At that time, it was the age of science, technology and navigation. In literature it is regarded as one of the best periods. People of that age never thought that the plays of Shakespeare were the waste of time in the poetry of Spenser was the silly dream of on idle man.

The nineteenth century is regarded the age of the Industrial Revolution. Definitely it was also the age of science and technology for the people of that time. During this period literature of top quality was produced throughout the world. Poetry, dramas and novel flourished in this period with greater strength.

The twentieth century was the period of the two World Wars. The early half of this century was the period of disillusionment. But even then very impressive literature was produced. The second half of this century saw the beginning of computer and space travel. In both the parts of this century literature received warm reception. So in the twenty first century also, literature has full scope.

Literature will provide relief to the people as it has been providing throughout the ages Writers will keep on recalling human passions and experiences in the form of poetry, plays, novels and short stories. This activity will continue entertaining the reading public forever.

“All literature is but a word--a thought--a maxim amplified.” (Edward Counsel)
