ESSAY:
A folk tale is a traditional story that circulates within a community by work of mount. Our country garners a rich culture that entails traditional folk tales. Pakistan has a wide variety of folk tales, mostly of the country or in neighbouring countries. Every province of our country has its own folk tales which are being handed down from one generation to another without any major hurdle or hassle.
The origin of these folk tales dates back to the ancient times on our land where now our country Pakistan lies. Punjabi folklore includes traditional customs, tales, legends, sayings, dances, songs and art forms either preserved among common Punjabi folk or passed onto generations by the word of mouth. These unsupported nations have a wide circulation throughout the Punjab region. In the past, only administrators and scholars used to get formal education, whereas, folk tales used to teach people about religious principles and moral values. In addition to that, folktales also preserved political history and provided entertainment.
Popular most Punjabi folktales are majorly comprised of love tragedies. Young lovers were forced to give up their love for each other, in the wake of imitating social conventions and family values. Despite of facing extreme opposition, the protagonists of these love tales were defiant enough to turn down every obstacle which came their way. Through their love stories never resulted in "happy the endings" yet their immense soul-to-soul love earned them the status of legends.
The heroines of Punjabi folk tales were daring enough to challenge the societal norms and conventions. They, unlike conventional women, sacrifice their all the way of true love. There are four popular tragic resources of the Punjab: HeerRanjha, SassiPunnun, Mirza Sahiba and SohniMahiwal.
These folktales are very much famous all over the Pakistan that so many dramas and movies are based on them, even in today's world writers get inspiration form these folktales although the whole scenario of showbiz has been changed but still write them in modern style. These folktales have an imposing influence on our culture. These stories are told from generations to generations and are the blend of fiction and truth; these folktales are more famous in the rural areas as compared to urban places. These folktales are the part of our culture that is why these stories are always in mind in any cultural festival, at any school function these folktales reminds us our rich culture of love and sacrifice.
