ESSAY:

Inspite of the fact that 61% of the total cultivated area devoted to production of food and crops and about 52% labour force is engaged in the production of food, still there is a problem of food shortage. We have been importing food grains, sugar and wheat from abroad.

Agriculture sector in Pakistan is facing a lot of problems e.g. non-economic holdings, low quality seeds, less use of urea, insufficient facilities of irrigation, water-logging and salinity, soil erosion and outdated techniques of cultivation. In spite of above problems crop diseases and pests damage the food grains. Insufficient facilities of storage are another cause of wastage of food grains. Due to these reasons Pakistan could not become self sufficient in food production. In Pakistan, population growth rate is greater than G.N.P. rate. Majority of the population is not  taking part in production process. Efficiency of our labour force is lower than European countries. Agriculture sector is always facing natural calamities. Sometimes crops are destroyed due to heavy rains, floods, storms and sometimes crop diseases and pests become the cause of low production.

Decrease in production is not the only cause of food storage. Smuggling to neighbouring countries and hoarding by big traders to earn more profits during shortage is also cause of food crises. About 10% of our food grain is smuggled. In previous years, there was a trend of increase in prices of cash crops and due to increase in their demand, there was increasing trend in their prices. While the prices of food crops could not increase at the same rate. Due to defensive land tenure system there is a lack of interest among the peasants and tenants. But landlords do not participate actively rather only spend money on luxuries.

Pressure of population on urban sector is increasing and area which was previously used for cultivation of food crops has been replaced by posh colonies and residential areas. Area under cultivation near urban sector is decreasing and shortage of wheat and vegetables appears to be a huge problem.

Food shortage problem can be avoided with farm mechanism in agriculture because it encourages multiple cropping, reduces dependence upon animal power, increases efficiency of farmers, water supply is made in time and it reduces cost. There is a need for making the family planning policy successful and increasing the ratio of effective population. There should be heavy punishment to those who indulge in snuggling and hoarding. Increase in food crops is only possible when quality seeds, fertilizers and modern methodologies of agriculture are used and for this system agricultural loan is necessary.
