ESSAY:

Dengue fever is a gift of nature for the people of tropical and sub tropical regions. In 1970, dengue was reorganized as a major viral disease. The first out-break of dengue in Karachi was recorded in 1994, which was said through trading of tyres from some countries of South Africa. There are upto 100 million cases of Dengue Fever Worldwide every year. The most common occurrences are in urban parts of tropical areas, such as central and South America, parts of Africa, parts of Asia and Pacific. During the year 2011, it attacked the city Lahore and caused a large number of deaths.

Dengue is a mosquito-born vital infection causing two distinct types of clinical conditions known as Dengue Fever (DF), and Dengue Hemorrhage Fever (DHF) in humans. Dengue Fever is an acute viral illness characterized by sudden onset of fever for two to seven days, severe headache, muscles, abdominal discomfort rash, and pain behind the eyeball. It is generally self-limited, manageable and is non-fatal. Dengue Hemorrhage Fever (DHF) is severe and fatal infection. In this fever the normal human clotting process becomes deranged, resulting in spontaneous bleeding in patients, leading in some cases to death.

Dengue fever epidemics have become a cyclical nightmare in Pakistan over the last several years. The infection was quite rare in South Asia before turn of the country, but starting in the last decade.

Unfortunately, many of the factors contributing to dengue outbreaks, from poor hygiene and sanitation to climate change, are risk factors common to most infectious disease. If no more major changes occur. Pakistanis could be exposed to a host of epidemics, such as measles, pneumonia and cholera.

Since neither cure nor vaccine exists for dengue fever. Prevention is the only option to control the human and economic cost of the epidemic. People must adopt precautionary measures against dengue. They should carry out anti- mosquito spray in their houses, offices and work places frequently besides covering water storage pots and places, draining out the stagnant water, keeping houses clean and dry and draining out water from swimming pools, fountains, waterfalls and room coolers when they are not in used. The best method of prevention is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
