Work is a primary province of the civilized life. It is the source of most rights and human welfare. It brings happiness to man's life and promotes his well being. Work is an integral part of civilized life; without it life loses its motive forces and its character.
Work is a paramount sponsor and source of happiness. Work, according to Carlyle, is the grand cure of all the maladies that beset mankind. It is the key to all progress. Work is compared to life and idleness to death.
The prosperity of any nation depends on the work of its people. If they remain like lotus-eaters, no nation can progress or achieve anything remarkable. The prosperity achieved by nations like Japan and France bears out this. No pain, no gain. Of all types of work, manual work or labor is most valuable and dignified.
The denigration of manual labor is a long, sad, enticing story of human civilization. There have been times and people in human history who tries to undervalue the dignity and worth of manual labour. The so-called progressive but grossly snobbish cultures and people have attempted to tarnish the image of manual laborers. But with the awakening of civilized man and enlightenment of modern man during the 19th century and onwards, the world has started to give the manual laborer their due respect and the status befitting to their worthiness. However, this is not a worldwide practice; in many parts of the world manual labor is still regarded as a lowly work and the laborers are looked down upon by their fellow being. In particular, there seems a tussle between the laborers and the capitalists.
An insight into the matter reveals the truth that no community can survive, let alone prosper, without the manual labor of farmers, industrial employees, construction workers, miners and innumerable other men and women who toil to make everyone's day-to-day life possible. Yet a deeply entrenched prejudice against manual labor and laborers persists.

It is no more coincidence that the manual class, providing socially indispensable physical labor, frequently ends up deprived of income, status, social respect and even human dignity. All kinds of laborers deserve respect. But there are cultures and communities that consider certain types of labor ignoble and inferior. As a matter of fact, in certain circumstances, the work of farmers is much more important than that of teachers. The reason is that if the farmers don't work. We'll not be able to get any foodstuff. If street-cleaners do not work, life in cities and towns will become difficult. It does not denigrate a person if he becomes a day laborer or a street-cleaner, but it is certainly ignoble for him to become a knave or a thief.
The Holy Prophet (SAW) has preached hard work and presented his example before the mankind. He used to mend his shoes himself, milked his goats and pulled water from the well when needed. He participated in the digging moat during the Battle of Ahzab.
Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah is said to be one of the most industrious men on the face of earth in the sub-continent region during the 20th century. He would work from morning till late at night. His sister used to tell him to take care of his health and reduce work, and he would smile and say 'if leader of the nation does not work who else will?'. The motto of his life was 'work, work and work'.
It is necessary for our young men and women to recognize the dignity of labor. Traditionally, they prefer white-collar jobs to manual labor. Parents should inculcate in the minds of their children the dignity of labor. Manual work gives an opportunity to all who wish to take part in the government and the well being of the state. We should look up to the worker who earns his livelihood by the sweat of his brow.
