Subject : Problems created by the beggars / Street Begging

Sir,

I seek an opportunity through the column of your renowned newspaper to express my opinion on the rapidly increasing beggar population, which is causing great inconvenience to the citizens. It is an irritating paradox that as the city prospers and progresses, the number of beggars are increasing. Perhaps it is so because the increasing generosity of the people is making begging a profitable occupation.

We find the beggars in almost every street all the time, especially during rush hours. Recently, they are seen on the pavement of masjid and they visit door to door. Female beggars with sucking babies beg for alms. Beggars with some of their body limbs broken beg on carts.

Whatever the causes of begging and whatever the ways in which it is practiced, it is the ordinary citizens on the street, in public places or at homes, who suffer its ill-effects. Beggars often harass those who are unwilling to oblige them. The beggars show their disable-ness to the people and seek their sympathy and heavy amount. Sometime disguised beggars prove criminals. They may be anti-Pakistan.

Hence, it is time that authorities should take strict action against beggars and discourage begging in the city. The police should be given additional powers and responsibility to crack down on beggars. Exemplary punishment should be meted out to the culprits. The city's charitable organizations should be encouraged to help those among the beggars. Higher authorities should play an active role for the eradication of this evil.

Yours truly,

X.Y.Z.
