Essay:

Women forms about half of our population and they are active members of society, yet we have not succeed in according them the position or status they deserve. Most our women living in the villages are uneducated and uncultured lie village men. They do not have many of the rights, which men enjoy in village society. The women in the cities are in somewhat better position. Some of them can, of course, get  education and can marry after their choice. However, women in poor families like those of labourers or wage earners live like village women. Most of them work hard in their small, dirty houses, server their husbands and take care of their children and live in a quite a helpless condition.

Islam recognizes the position of woman to be the same as that of man. Islam is the sole religion that gives same status, position, rights, dignity and value to the women as that of men. In a woman, we find three different personalities a mother, a wife, and a daughter. The position of the mother is very much exalted in Islamic tradition. Prophet Muhammad SAW has gone so far as to say. “Paradise lies underneath the feet of your mothers.” As regards the position of woman as wife, the saying of the Prophet SAW js categorical. “The best among you is the one who is best towards his family.” With regards to woman as a daughter, the Islamic attitude can be realized from the reproached which the Holy Quran makes against the pagan pre-Islamic behavior at the birth of daughters.

Violence against women is a universal phenomenon which is based on customs, races, classes, Violence against women is a universal phenomenon which is based on customs, races, classes, ethics, religious and cultural boundaries. It is multi-dimensional and affects all aspects of women’s life. In Pakistan women have to face the threat of multiple forces of violence by family members, strangers and state agents. Farther according to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) the extreme form of violence includes driving women to suicide. Thus women are treated as property of men. Women become victims of violence. As far as domestic violence is concerned, it is mostly under reported as it is considered a private family matter.

As a practical system of life, it has differentiated the sphere and duties of men and women. Men are responsible for maintenance of women, “Their duty is to fulfill the economic needs of family. The women on the other hand have the foremost duty to guard their virtues and remain obedient to their husbands. In some of the cases it seems that man exercises authority over woman, which is very mean kind of activity. Here social institutions and Government should play a vital role in creating awareness among the people. Awareness should be raised through nationwide workshops, seminars, newspaper articles, and television and radio programs on issues of violence against women. Research, documentation and publication on issues of violence should be conducted. All political parties and the politicians should bring the issue of women’s violence. A woman must understand that her first duty is to look-after her family members. She must understand her responsibilities according to her status.
