"Newspapers are the world's mirror."            (James Ellis)

The word news is made of four letters that is N.E.W.S, which stands for North, East, West and South. thus, a newspaper's function is to collect news from the four corners of the world and to spread it in all directions for the people's information . Newspapers speak on behalf of the government and people, and help to educate the masses. Newspaper gives us the news and keeps our knowledge up to date. Thus, newspaper inform us about the changing events in our country and abroad .In other words, newspapers work as mirror to reflect worlds affairs. They bring countries and people closer and make us feel that we belong to one and the same family of the human race.

Newspapers play a very important role in the modern society. They are the index of all the political and non-political activities of the people. At the same time, they influence these activities. This indicates that the press has significant responsibilities. The most important thing that the press does is the awareness. It creates awareness among the people by giving them news of all sorts. The activities and politics of the government are made known to masses. This makes easy for every man to have his own opinion about what the government is doing. So the news not only satisfy his curiosity to know things but to judge his nature and value also. A responsible press in a free country always does the with honesty.

"In these times we fight for ideas and newspapers are our fortress". (Heine)

Another function of press is fair criticism on the activities of the government. But blind criticism is not the mark of a responsible press. Even when different newspapers have different political sympathies, useful things done by the government should be duly praised. Such fair criticism establishes creative understanding between the people and the government. This link is an important feature of democratic state.

The awareness created among the people by the press educates their minds and makes them responsible citizens. A responsible press always tries to keep this requirement in view. When the press of a country poisons the minds of people by giving them wrong information and bad instruction, it misuses its power. Its main function is to make the people as well as the government conscious of their respective responsibilities.

The newspapers publish informative articles on all sorts of subjects. Intelligent and well-educated men are invited to express their views on vital issues of the day. These articles are usually written by those who have good knowledge of their subjects. This my be called the direct way of educating the readers. Through such articles people are informed about various important problems which catch their attention. This purpose is partially fulfilled by the editorial.

The scientific inventions have brought all the nations closer to one another. It is essential that we know what do our neighbors do. The newspapers keep us aware of what is happening in other countries. A responsible press always tries to promote international good-will. Its little irresponsibility might lead the world into an atomic war. It is obvious that the press can only be responsible and useful, if it fulfils all these conditions. Fortunately, the press of our country comes up to this standard.

"Four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets".(Napoleon)
