ESSAY:
Electricity load-shedding or energy crises is one of the biggest issues in Pakistan including terrorism, poverty and unemployment. Energy has now become one of the basic essential requirements of not only the industry but equally essential for the common people, in fact the entire state.
Electricity load-shedding is a great curse. It brings untold misery to the people belonging to all walks of life whether they are students, patients, businessmen, industrialists, farmers, labourers, mechanics or housewives. It brings all economical, agricultural and industrial progress to a standstill. The function plays havoc with the electric equipment like refrigerators, VCRs, televisions, computers etc. The foreign investors shun to invest money in different fields due to energy crises. Moreover, thefts and robberies rise during load-shedding at night. In fact, if the energy crises continuous the industry will come to a standstill and as a result Pakistan's economy will collapse. Survival of people will become impossible. We may then have to import energy from abroad and that will cause a lump sum of foreign exchange.
Energy is created with the help of natural and artificial resources. Dams are the major sources of energy in Pakistan. There is another source of energy that energy through sunlight should be developed. Energy can also be obtained from sea water. Energy through windmill is an important and cheap source of energy. This source has so far been completely ignored. This is to be noted that about 24% of the electricity requirement is met by windmills in Germany.
Wastage of electricity should be totally controlled by taking drastic action against those who are wasting electric energy in terms of thousands of megawatts. It is commonly observed that shops that can do with two or three 40-watt tube lights to meet the desired level of luminance, use as many as 15 to 20 tubes. So shopkeepers must switch on energy savers instead of bulbs. We will have to compromise on luxurious lifestyles in order to meet the necessities.
These recommendations are neither impractical nor a step backward, as some sections may perceive them to be. If the above steps are taken, we will not only avoid the collapse of a bankrupt energy infrastructure, but also ensure progress in developing energy plants.
