ESSAY:

There was a time when women were regarded as inferior creatures. But recently they have proved their worth in every field of life. They are getting education like men. They are discarding purdah and have entered into every office and work with men. They have realized that women can also perform their jobs even outside their homes. They are becoming teachers, nurses, doctors, air hostesses and stenos. No doubt, they have proved their ability in every walk of life, but they are especially suitable for teaching and medical professions. They can become good teachers, doctors and nurses.

Nursing is an important profession for them. It is a noble profession. It is becoming popular day by day with the spread of education among the masses. This profession is most suitable for women. Women are kind and sympathetic by nature. They are gifted with tender feelings and emotions. Therefore, they can look after the patients with more sympathy and good feelings. It has been proved by experience that women perform the duties of nursing very efficiently.

Our country is woefully in need of them. In most of the village hospitals, we do not have enough of them. In their absence, a lady doctor cannot perform her duties efficiently. She cannot attend to a large number of patients. Again, in time of war, nurses are seriously needed. A lady doctor cannot look after a large number of wounded soldiers and military staff carefully. It is the nurses who can give a helping hand to the lady doctors and thus look after the wounded soldiers with great care and attention. Nursing is the noblest profession. Dressed in white uniforms and cloth cap on their heads, they look very smart. They administer medicines to the patients. They move about the wards of the hospitals where patients are looking forward to their arrival.

The Indo-Pakistan war has shown that every Muslim woman should have training in nursing. Nursing and First Aid should be made compulsory subjects in all colleges and schools. We should also try to raise the status of nurses in our country. The life of a hospital nurse is not a bed of roses. It is hard and often tiresome. She has to attend the hospital from early morning. At about noon, she gets about an hour for rest and lunch. Again she is on duty till evening. Then she goes home.

While she is in the hospital, she has to perform many duties. She registers the temperature of different patients in their respective charts and files. Then she prepares medicines and administers them to different patients. She also gives injections to some patients. She attends to every patient carefully. She has to live among groans and cries.

When the doctor comes for the usual round in the war, she has to accompany him. She supplies necessary information about each patient to the doctor and carries out his orders. At times, the doctor becomes angry and she has to hear it calmly. However, nursing as a profession is really noble and great.
