Meaning: to separate, to come to an end.
Sentence: Finally the meeting broke up at noon.
82. Pass away
Meaning: to die.
Sentence: She passed away from prolonged ailment.
83. Make up for
Meaning: improve, correct.
Sentence: I sent him a present to try to make up for my rude behaviour.
84. Look down upon
Meaning: to consider someone unimportant.
Sentence: A lot of people look down upon homeless people.
85. Oily tongue
Meaning: flattering tongue.
Sentence: People who have oily tongue are good sales representatives.
86. French Leave
Meaning: an absence without permission or notice.
Sentence: He went on French leave to evade his creditors.
87. Carry the day
Meaning: To be victorious; win.
Sentence: Australian team was favourite before the match started but our team carried the day finally.
88. Cat’s paw
Meaning: A person used by another as a tool. A puppet.
Sentence: Poor people easily become a cat’s paw in the hands of politicians.
89. Out at elbow
Meaning: In poor condition.
Sentence: He is out at elbow as he has lost everything in gambling.
90. At cross purposes
Meaning: with opposing viewpoints.
Sentence: We can not get along with each others; we are already at cross purposes.
91. Bear the brunt of
Meaning: Face the worst circumstances.
Sentence: The team's coach had to bear the brunt of the criticism when they lost the match.
92. Beat about the bush
Meaning: To avoid coming to the point. To say something without clarity.
Sentence: Do not beat about the bush and tell me the reality.
93. Bolt from the blue
Meaning: sudden surprise.
Sentence: The news of Mr. Daniel’s resign struck all his colleagues as a bolt from the blue.
94. Call to the account
Meaning: to ask someone to explain and justify his behavior or performance.
Sentence: The manager called the cashier to account for investigation.
95. Dead end
Meaning: An end of a passage, such as a street or pipe, that affords no exit.
Sentence: Desperation is leading him to a dead end.
96. Drop a line
Meaning: communicate in writing.
Sentence: Drop me a line to inform about your arrival because we do not have telephones in this area.

Meaning: To cease living completely; become extinct.
Sentence: Some tribal customs have died out long ago.

Meaning: helpful or significant.
Sentence: This effort will never come to what we are expecting.
99. Vest in
Meaning: to grant complete power or control to someone.
Sentence: The king vested all the military power to his relatives.
100. Damocles’ sword
Meaning: impending danger.
Sentence: We are living with Damocles’ sword hanging over our heads until the war is over.
