ESSAY:

"Democracy is when the indigent, and not the men of property, are the rulers". (Aristotle)

Democracy is a system of government in which people choose their leaders and make decisions by casting vote. This system is based on the direct approval of the public. This method of government has been popular in the world for centuries. People elect their rulers for a specific term. These rulers are in fact their servants. If they serve them well for one term, they can be elected again.

"Democracy is the government of people, by the people, for the people". (Abraham Lincoln)

In Pakistan, we see different types of system. The real misfortune of our country was the death of Quaid-e-Azam. He succeeded in winning for us a separate country but he could have enough time to set it at the track of democracy.

Those who followed him had their axes to grind. They were never loyal to the nation. They plundered the national wealth. The politicians were not sincere. They quarreled among themselves over minor things. They were selfish and mean. The result was that the governments could not be stable. This provided an opportunity to the heads of the army to interfere in politics. The natural outcome was the military government.

Since then, material law and democracy have been playing hide-and-seek game. Unfortunately, our country made rapid economic progress under military governments. Whenever an elected government came, the result was disorder and restlessness. The military dictators proved better than the elected dictators. The reason is that the person who is elected in the general election is not the true representative of the common people. He is either an industrialist or a big landlord. He cannot even think of the problems of the poor masses.

"Corruption and hypocrisy should not to be inevitable products of democracy, as they undoubtedly are today". (Gandhi)

Under military governments, offices are generally held by technocrat. They are skilled persons and know their business very well. It does not mean that we should favour and opt for the military government. We should, in fact device some effective system of true representation of the public.

If the elected members are the true representatives of the people, democracy can work successfully in Pakistan. Otherwise, every time the general elections will result in disaster. There must be proper check and balance on our political leaders so that they may not be able to cross their limits. Only this thing can make democracy a success in Pakistan. Election commission should also play positive and strict role during election.

"People are always teaching us democracy, but the people who teach us democracy don't want to learn it themselves". (Vladimir Putin)
